Preventing violence through safe living space
SIWO was launched in January 2025. The problem is concrete: victims of domestic violence can hardly find affordable housing in Leipzig. Places in women's shelters are scarce. Those who cannot find accommodation stay longer than necessary - and block places for other people seeking protection.
This is where SIWO comes in. Together with the Housing Contact Centre, a personal advice and placement centre is being created - for women and children affected by violence on the one hand, and for those offering accommodation on the other. The contact centre supports both sides: in the search for accommodation, with everyday issues and safety aspects - even after a successful placement. Housing cooperatives, estate agents and private landlords can get in touch at any time.
The HTWK Leipzig research team continuously analyses the experiences. A direct campaign, an online portal and targeted information materials are intended to attract new housing providers and break down existing prejudices against people affected by violence.
The aim is clear: to break cycles of violence earlier, relieve the burden on women's shelters and make it easier for those affected to lead a self-determined life. After the pilot phase in Leipzig, a nationwide expansion is planned. In the long term, SIWO is thus making a contribution to the implementation of the Istanbul Convention.
